There were nearly 20,000 employees from 303 companies who participated in our 17th annual 100 Best Companies to Work For in Oregon survey. It might not have been the best year for business, with a bad economy hanging on, but you wouldn’t know it by how our 2010 winners treated their employees. What makes a great place to work? Robust health care plans were important to being a Best Company. This group offers substantial premium offsets and a surprisingly high number of alternative care and wellness plans. It’s also about inspired leadership, collaboration and caring, along with a healthy dose of fun. Congratulations to the class of 2010!

Oregon Business is proud to launch the 100 Best Nonprofits to Work For in Oregon this year to recognize nonprofits as key businesses critical to the economic health of the state, and ones that employ hundreds of thousands of Oregonians.

Being a great place to work is just as important to nonprofit organizations as it is to for-profit companies. Workplace satisfaction helps retain the best employees, cuts turnover costs, boosts productivity and creativity, and gives organizations a competitive edge. In an economy where every dollar and every resource counts, it’s crucial for employers to know how to effectively manage their workforce. 

The 100 Best Green Companies rankings were calculated by Oregon Business research editor Brandon Sawyer and research partner Davis, Hibbitts & Midghall based on confidential employee surveys and a report completed by each company. The green questions were asked during the 100 Best Companies survey last fall. It isn’t easy being green, but this year’s inaugural class of the 100 Best Green Companies to Work For in Oregon shows that if you’re committed to sustainable practices, it pays off not only for the environment and the bottom line, but also in being a great place to work.
