Registration for Oregon Business’ second annual 100 Best Nonprofits to Work For in Oregon survey opens  April 19th. You may sign up to participate until June 4th. The online employee and employer surveys will run through June 11th.

If your nonprofit has at least 10 paid employees, please consider registering.

Oregon Business magazine has named the first annual 100 Best Nonprofits to Work for in Oregon. The rankings were revealed Tuesday night in a sold-out event at the Portland Art Museum, along with the October issue of the magazine, which spotlights the winners and the nonprofit sector.

More than 6,700 employees at over 200 nonprofits throughout the state participated in the project. Based on the magazine’s widely regard 100 Best Companies project, the nonprofit version was created to recognized a critical business sector that employs hundreds of thousands of workers.

Nonprofit Employee Survey Rules

The survey consists of 55 statements divided into six workplace categories. Employees rate the statements in terms of satisfaction and importance. It also has six optional demographic questions, and two open-ended questions for written comments. Nonprofits are scored based on the average satisfaction rating for each of the 60 statements.

Keeping employees happy

It’s challenging enough to keep employees happy and workplace morale high during the best of times. But what about in the worst of times?  Some, like Northwest Newborn (No. 2 Small), have found ways to maintain a high sense of satisfaction and loyalty.

Lessons of the not-so-great

Companies can often learn more about their workplaces issues from negative comments than from praise. Here's a sampling from some of the 100 Best employee surveys of what doesn't work, even from some of the best workplaces in the state.

Ingredients of a great workplace

What do the Top 10 Best Companies do that keeps their employees motivated, loyal and upbeat? Paying 100% of health insurance premiums and ugly t-shirt contests are part of it. And don't forget the persuasive powers of company pups like Frankie from Stamp Connection (No. 3 Small).
