Company participation in the 100 Best survey is voluntary and free of charge. Participating companies must employ at least 15 Oregon workers.

Size categories

Companies are categorized as SMALL if they have 15-34 Oregon employees; MEDIUM with 35-99 Oregon employees; and LARGE companies are those with a total of 100 or more Oregon employees.

Employee survey

For the 2010 survey nearly 20,000 Oregon workers rated their satisfaction with 303 employers. This year, the survey includes 65 workplace qualities:

1. Benefits and compensation: 10 statements regarding health coverage, fitness program, retirement plan, salary and bonuses, employee retention
2. Work environment: 10 statements regarding scheduling, diversity, family balance, teamwork, fun, technology, charity/community work, policies and procedures
3. Decision-making and trust: 10 statements regarding collaboration, trust and openness, cooperation across divisions, organizational pride, ethical standards
4. Performance management: 10 statements regarding performance feedback and goals, employee accountability, rewards and incentives
5. Career development and learning: 10 statements regarding opportunities, promotions, employee training, educational support, company communications
6. Sustainable practices (Used for 100 Best Green Cos. List): 15 statements regarding company's sustainable progress and goals, recycling, water and energy onservation, renewable energy, transportation, facilities, purchasing policies, supply chain

Employer benefits survey

Company representatives answer more than 50 questions covering a comprehensive set of benefits including health and wellness plans, time off, family-friendly policies, work scheduling, incentives, retirement plans, corporate culture and sustainable practices (used for 100 Best Green Cos. List)

Scoring

The employee survey counts for 5/6 of a participating company’s 100 Best Cos. score. For each company, the average employee rating is calculated in each of the first five categories of the survey on a scale of 0-100. The benefits survey is also scored on a 100-point scale, accounting for the remaining 1/6 of the overall score, resulting in a total possible score of 600. Satisfaction and Importance ratings from the final Sustainable Practices count for 2/3 of the 100 Best Green Cos. score, with questions from the Employer survey counting for the remaining 1/3.

Ranking

The 2010 100 Best Cos. list were composed of the Top 33 Large, Top 34 Medium and Top 33 Small Companies based on the scoring formula above. In 2011, we will score and rank companies according to our new size categories above to create a list of 100. The 100 Best Green Cos. was simple a list of the Top 100 participating companies and nonprofits based on employee satisfaction and importance, and  employer benefits survey answers.

 

Keeping employees happy

It’s challenging enough to keep employees happy and workplace morale high during the best of times. But what about in the worst of times?  Some, like Northwest Newborn (No. 2 Small), have found ways to maintain a high sense of satisfaction and loyalty.

Lessons of the not-so-great

Companies can often learn more about their workplaces issues from negative comments than from praise. Here's a sampling from some of the 100 Best employee surveys of what doesn't work, even from some of the best workplaces in the state.

Ingredients of a great workplace

What do the Top 10 Best Companies do that keeps their employees motivated, loyal and upbeat? Paying 100% of health insurance premiums and ugly t-shirt contests are part of it. And don't forget the persuasive powers of company pups like Frankie from Stamp Connection (No. 3 Small).
